The public should be warned that the water served by the Westerly Public Water System should be boiled before drinking. It is suggested by the RI Department of Health that all water be boiled for at least one minute, and allowed to cool before drinking. Studies indicate that boiling water kills bacteria and other organisms contained therein. If boiling the water is not available, bottled water can also be used instead. It is recommended that boiled or bottled water must be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, food preparation, bathing of infants and others, until further notice. Studies confirmed the presence of E. coli bacteria in the water supply of Westerly Rhode Island.
The article stressed that E. coli in these waters indicate that it is contaminated with human or animal wastes. These bacteria are known to cause diseases such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headaches and other symptoms. E. coli should be taken seriously especially for people with weakened immune system. Likewise, these bacteria may pose a risk for infants, toddlers, young children and even adults whose compromised immune system is severely compromised.
